WHO I AM _ 김태윤 _ 미디어아티스트

Musician, Media Artist & Software Engineer

Drawing from his career as a programmer of major web portals and social networking services, Media artist and programmer Taiyun Kim is mainly working on data-based projects with an interest in the distribution structure of data in new media. Currently, he is an artist-in-residence at the 'ARKO Art Center C-Lab' with his team members Hankil Ryu and JiHyun Yoon, under the name of ‘Plan B’.

Highly interested in the productive sharing of information and social network services, he developed and launched 'kin.naver.com' in 2002 and also developed the giftshop service for 'cyworld.com' in 2011. 'kin.naver.com' is the most well-known knowledge-based online community service and the 'cyworld.com' is the largest social networking service in Korea.

With years of experience developing web portals under his belt, Taiyun Kim focuses on the rapidly transformed media landscape that followed the introduction of the smartphone and works with the various data that permeates today’s new media. He mainly focuses on the re-mediating of new media such as portal site and social network service and its process of de-mediating. Furthermore, he reveals the structural weakness of the digital by repeating the transformation between the digital and the analogue. For doing this, he actively makes the best use of various collectible data and develops them into the form of installation work while working with many collaborators including JiHyun Yoon and Hankil Ryu.

Kim anticipated the idea of the inconspicuous accumulation of digital footprints through his mobile artwork <Hyper Fish, 2010>, and in 2011 - wherein many societal issues arose from the convergence of Twitter and smartphones – he began to more consciously involve the idea of social networks in his work. In <sp@ce, 2011>, Kim himself developed a Twitter app that examined societal issues such as the four-river refurbishment project through site-specific performances. In the “Secrets of Favorite” exhibition of 2012, he sought to express the organic relationship between various avenues of new media through spatial and visual flow by installing 3 artworks that utilized the real time data collected from popular search words, Twitter, and “minihompy’s” on the T-Tower’s outer and inner façade.

Later on, he discusses the over-exposure of one’s self in social networks in <Twitter Buddha, 2012> and offers a philosophical study on the relationship between new media and reality through the conversion process between the digital and analogue, as well as the noise that is produced from the conversion in <A/DD/A, 2012> and <2013 : A/DD/A>. Meanwhile, in works such as <we_cloud, 2012> and <Cloud Painting, 2012>, Kim experiments with the possibilities of art that is without a conscious subject - that is, art in which the observer’s viewpoint affects the actions of the main agent. Devised to resemble a giant “Kakaotalk” screen in its appearance, <Parallel Timeline, 2012> examines the prevalence of big data in in our everyday lives and defines the quality of “smart” media as “avenir immédiat”. In a world where records are left but recollections of it are minimal; a world in which anyone can access and be exposed to data, data becomes our life and art itself.

However, as it is seen from the work <Soulflies, 2013> installed at 5.18 plaza located in previous mayor hall of Jeonnam province, his work started from affectionate gaze on the dim light-the glow of light fly, which is still surviving in this society where variety of experience was destroyed rather than from the interest in the powerful light of media if we say like Georges Didi-Huberman. He finds out the symptom of soft light from the data, which is hidden in the backside of image and then tries to recover the ‘gap’ of communication and the digital fluidity trapped in the solidified structure. Coming up with the solution for this, he proposes the new structure of data storage its share and distribution, namely <Fluid Sate Society, 2014>.
